Nice place, and very enthausiastic service / cook / owner. Delicious food and pleasant evening in the little bar. The rooms are relatively simple and cramped, but that is inherent to the location (a ship).

Kortrijk, the garden of numerous castles

Discover some remarkable places where an imposing structure stood or stands. Look for castles, manors and palaces that tell part of the city’s history.

For a long time, a castle was equated with a defensive fortress; think of the Castle of the Counts in Ghent. Over the centuries, the need for the wealthy to defend themselves disappeared and large mansions or pleasure courts were built in their place. These were often then given the name “castle” in the vernacular. Some of those very rich did not retreat outside the city but went to live in the city center. These luxurious residences resembled royal palaces on the interior level and were therefore named city palaces.

* Note that the existing buildings are not available for viewing and are often privately owned. Please respect the privacy of the owners and therefore do not enter the sites.

At some, the castle garden is accessible and even a picnic area and play area are provided.

Click here to find an overview of the castles trail.

Brothel towers and lowered Slate banks

The towers are built of limestone and sandstone. The southern “Speytorre” was built in 1385 to control traffic on the Lys. The tower was also part of the fortified enclosure of Kortrijk’s first burial castle. The northern “Inghelburghtorre” from 1415 served as an armory and was provided for the use of artillery. The Broel Bridge originally dates back to 1385. It was destroyed several times and rebuilt each time.

Starting in April 2018, you can enjoy a terrace on the lowered banks. This is the tourist hotspot of Kortrijk, in a beautiful setting surrounded by the best that Kortrijk has to offer.

Museums

Abby

With Abby, Kortrijk will have a new, quirky visual art exhibition site in 2024, with identity as a layered and bold central theme.
Abby will be a hybrid hybrid hybrid of an art hall, a museum and a citywide living. In bold programming, through innovative scenography and with art as a universal language, Abby welcomes you to explore together what defines and connects us as human beings, across borders, generations and cultures.

The design for the exhibition site is the result of a collaboration between top architects Barozzi Veiga and Tab Architects, complemented by Koplamp Architects as restoration expert. The historic abbey site is being reworked into a timeless, compact and sustainable architectural gem that places heritage at its center. A new park pavilion will act as a magnet for the city and for visitors from far beyond. The biggest surprise is underground, where two state-of-the-art exhibition halls will be provided that will expand the site by some 600 square meters of additional exhibition space.

Abby will open its doors in the fall of 2024.

1302: revolt, battle, turning point

Experience the Battle of the Golden Spurs as if you were there yourself!
Every half hour, the Count’s Chapel is transformed into a breathtaking sound and light show, where immersive animations immerse you in the growth and flowering of the County of Flanders. The story moves seamlessly into the causes of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, until you find yourself in the middle of the battlefield.
At the 12-meter-long experience table, among other things, you put on a knight in proper attire, see on models how the conflict and the battle itself evolved, and experience in the viewers how both a French knight and a Flemish weaver experienced the battle. The French king and Pieter De Coninck also give their views on the conflict here.
The absolute highlight of the museum experience, however, is Oxford’s authentic coffin. Explore this more than 700-year-old object with your eyes, then dissect it on the screen in minute detail.
You round out your visit with some insights about the path the battle and the lion took to become a symbol of Flanders, and the concept of identity takes on multiple layers.

Texture – museum of flax and textiles

TEXTURE tells about the linen and flax industry. A story with very strong roots that demonstrates punishing professionalism and entrepreneurship, bold innovation and agility, and constant reinvention of itself. In three rooms furnished in an authentic flax sifting house (1912), you will discover the revolutionary development brought about by the flax industry in this region. The past will surprise you but the stories of today and tomorrow will amaze and inspire you. For centuries, Flanders has been renowned for its textiles, and linen plays a starring role in them! In the past, luxury products such as lace and damask were very popular with the nobility and bourgeoisie. The basic linen woven here en masse was for everyday use. Along the Leieboorden grew an industry that conquered the world: flax processing. Still ‘Courtrai flax’ is a top quality product known and sought after internationally.

You will find out what their daily life was like, see the Beguinage evolve and admire the Beguinage treasures. And all in that glorious St. Anne’s Hall, built in 1682, which serves you a lovely view of the bleaching meadow and the 17th-century cottages that embrace it. The essence of the Beguinage, condensed into one image. For that reason alone, this Experience Center is worth a visit.

The King Albert Park

King Albert Park was originally called Leie Park. It was constructed in 1905 on a drained Leie bend. Slate Park was renamed Albert Park in 1935, and King Albert Park in 1968. This two-hectare open urban park surrounds the intersection of Kortrijk’s important waterways. The two Leie arms and the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal meet here. Thus, the water splits the park into four sections connected by bridges. As part of the Leiewerken, the park was completely redesigned, expanded and integrated into the beautiful new environment of the Leieboorden.

The Buda Park

Buda Park is part of the complete redevelopment of the Lys and the Leie banks. Young and old alike can relax here in the beautiful setting of the River Lys. During the months of July and August, Buda Park is transformed into a beach with sunbathing area and bar, allowing residents and tourists to enjoy the sunshine to the maximum. However, because of the dangerous undercurrent, swimming in the Lys is not allowed.

The Square

The Square has a military past. In the mid-17th century, a citadel was built here with barracks. In the midst of the military buildings was a training ground, today’s Square. The military buildings were demolished, trees were planted, and in 1879 the Square became a public park. In 2002, the park was renovated to a design by the Wirtz firm. Hooded trees were uprooted and gave way to deciduous corridors with dolomite walkways. The fountains add a fresh touch to the park. Centrally you will find a stage between seating stands. Characteristic of the park are the monumental plane trees, lime trees and wild chestnuts

Queen Astrid Park

The park takes its name from Queen Astrid’s visit in April 1935, four months before she perished. The actual park had long existed as Volkspark. The first section was designed in 1906, and in 1996 the park was expanded by 1 hectare. Starting in 2003, the park was restored in several stages. Thus, the pond was restored to its historic state, and the fountains at the entrance were restored. The two lions, which have flanked the entrance since the park’s early years, were restored and given a sunny color chosen by local residents. Two semicircular canopied and leafy aisles of American lime lead you into the heart of the park.

Beguinage Park

Most of the Beguinage Park used to belong to the gardens of the Groeninge Abbey and the Saint Vincent rest home. The last residents of Groeninge Abbey were the Poor Clares. The retirement home is undergoing a complete transformation.

The park is still fully walled today, with three different access roads. Of the original structure of the park, only the old dividing wall with its three brick gates, a small chapel and some valuable trees now remain.

The park also serves as a beautiful backdrop for numerous outdoor activities such as the “Mayday Mayday” festival, summer concerts and exhibitions.

The Rose Garden

The rose garden is located in the middle of the historic greenery of Castle Park ‘t Hoge. This 3-acre park is more than 175 years old and contains several remarkable trees. In 1959, part of the park was set up as a rosary. The rose garden includes a test garden, where more than a hundred new rose creations from European selection houses are planted each year. There is also a demonstration garden with varieties of roses that are currently performing well, and a historical garden that shows the evolution of the rose over the centuries.

City Green Marionettes, The Dragonfly and Hoeve Te Coucx

The development of the City Green Marionettes is still in progress. The urban green space consists of several “landscape rooms,” which have been systematically planted or ecologically managed in recent years. The whole will be an open green area interspersed with trees.

Hoeve Te Coucx is a nature education center, where sustainability is important. This includes heating with wood pellets and a reed bed for wastewater treatment. The farmstead is a base for gentle recreation.

There is a nature education pavilion at the highest point in the area. The pavilion is shaped like a giant dragonfly.

The Baggaertshof

The Baggaertshof was founded in 1638 by the Baggaert sisters, who set up 12 cottages and a porter’s house for poor widows and unmarried women. Along with a chapel, these cottages stand around a rectangular courtyard. It was the founders and later their heirs who decided who was included. “Rules and ordinances” were established for the inmates. Thus, residents were required to be home early to ring the big bell. In the chapel, Saint Dympna is invoked against madness and epilepsy. An herb garden has been here for centuries. In 1981, a medicinal herb garden was established by the “Werkgroep Kruiden Medici,” an association of pharmacists and doctors from Kortrijk. More than two hundred different herbs have been planted. The Baggaertshof is a protected monument.

The city walking tour “Metamorphosis of the Citypasses here.

More info: Baggaertshof

Open: spring and summer 2 to 6 p.m. l fall and winter 2 to 5 p.m. Closed on Mondays, Fridays and holidays.

St. Anthony’s church and Lourdes grotto

Kortrijk experienced a major population boom in the nineteenth century. So there was a need for new parish churches. The Passionist Fathers settled around the Veemarkt and founded a monastery, a school and St. Anthony’s Church (1873). The church became a popular confessional site in Kortrijk. This protected monument is built in neo-Romanesque style.

Brother Isidore was a figure that captured the imagination. He had shaky health when he moved into the neighborhood around the Cattle Market in 1912. He was therefore given the less intensive job of porter in 1913 (after a year of being a cook). He tried to help anyone who came to him during World War I, and so was nicknamed “Brother Good. Brother Isidore died in 1916, but even after his death he continued to inspire people. In 1952, all the streets were full of people when Brother Isidore’s body was transferred to the new tomb in St. Anthony’s Church. In 1984, he was even beatified.

The Lourdes Grotto immediately catches the eye of most visitors. The fake cave in Veldstraat was consecrated by Monsignor Waffelaert on Feb. 11, 1908, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first apparition of Mary in Lourdes. Consequently, since that day, a visit to St. Anthony’s Church is often concluded with a moment of reflection at the Lourdes Grotto, an oasis of peace in the bustling city.

Basement God’s

In St. Martin’s Church, you can enter the “Cellar of God” in a side chapel. A place where many pilgrims came (and come!) to “serve” against all sorts of calamities and diseases, and pray for support. There are bills with messages, such as “Hope my son returns well from trip,” and people burn a candle there. Until recently, there was more to this: one could be blessed with a dozen relics, receive a blessed cake, and a medal or ribbon to be worn around the sick body part.

As early as 1413 there was talk of this unique place of popular devotion. Under the high altar, a kind of cave was installed, in which the scene of the entombment was depicted. Karel Delbaere of Kortrijk sculpted this in 1894, after the previous sculpture group was destroyed by a fire. Many beguines kept watch here to help, comfort and encourage people. There is an image of Mary because she is “the mother of sorrows. Sister Beguine Augusta was one of the greatest inspirers of the “Cellar of God.

Miracle figurine of O-L-V of Groeninghe

So the story of this miracle statue reads: “The statue of Mary of Groeninghe, Enhanced by many Miracles was found in 1281 in a forest by Pope Martin the IV, and honored to Beatrix Countess of Flanders in 1285 who was then in Roomen and brought the statue to Curterick.

Indeed, legend has it that Countess Beatrice brought this figurine from a pilgrimage from Rome. She would have gotten it from the pope. This is doubtful because other writings about the Countess’ life make no mention of a pilgrimage to Rome. Admittedly, it remains a beautiful fait divers. This beautiful 13th-century Gothic ivory statue is on display in St. Michael’s Church. A small replica is also on display at Kortrijk 1302. Therefore, the connection between the statue and the Battle of the Golden Spurs is not minus. Before the battle, the Flemish troops would have invoked the statue of Mary with child. Their prayers were answered, and the Flemish troops defeated the French cavalry army. Since then, this artful little sculpture has been called a “miracle statue. Admittedly, there is no certainty that the figurine was already in Kortrijk at that time.

Garden Messeyne

You can discover this urban garden via an underpass of the Hotel Messeyne or via the Guido Gezelle path. The garden belonged to a large 19th-century mansion owned by the merchant and manufacturer of linen and lace, Mr. Benoit. He also had a bleachery next to the house. The Hotel Messeyne still overlooks the garden, but anyone can visit it.

The showpieces of the garden are the whimsical pond with a decorative cast-iron bridge. It is a very romantic garden with paths, rolling lawns and different types of trees and shrubs (lime, beech, chestnut, walnut, sweet chestnut, ash, maple, yew, sycamore, rhododendron, hydrangea, tree peony, lilac, birch…). There is also a neo-Gothic gazebo in the garden, which is protected as a monument.

Medieval cellar

The cellar was discovered in 1955 during the construction of a department store on the corner of Grand Place and Tournai Street. The typical Romanesque cross arches rest on heavy pillars. The late 12th-century cellar was one of the first stone cellars in the city. The presence of the cellar indicates the wealth of the inhabitants of the time. The two built-in columns show that the cellar was originally larger. The cellar was protected in 1983.

Location: corner of Grote Markt and Doorniksestraat

Plees Mill

Preetjes Mill is literally unique: it is the only preserved swinging mill in Europe. At first, the scutching was done with very simple tools, but around 1850 it was mechanized: a pair of scutching boards were mounted on a rotating wheel that was driven by feet. It doesn’t take long for someone to come up with the idea of running these so-called star mills on wind power. Around 1870, there were ten scutching mills in Heule alone.

Preetjes Mill was built in 1866 by Ivo Deprez – hence the name – and served until 1914. A thorough restoration followed in the 1990s and the mill and its surroundings were protected as a village landmark. Today, Preet’s mill is the only one still working in Europe.

Visits:

The mill heritage is much more than the structures alone. The profession of milling and all the knowledge surrounding it are also at least as impressive. He is a true craftsman who has to learn for years to operate his mill to the rhythm of nature, paying attention to the environment and technology. The miller of Preetjes Molen is happy to assist you. You can visit it every third Sunday of the month from April through September.

Address: Hoge Dreef, Heule. The Leiestreek West bicycle network passes by here.
TIP: Start from Texture towards the Leie to bike junction 10 and then choose junctions 63 and 14 and you will pass by this mill.

Open: every third Sunday of the month from April through September from 2 to 5 p.m. | free of charge
