Discover some remarkable places where an imposing structure stood or stands. Look for castles, manors and palaces that tell part of the city’s history.
For a long time, a castle was equated with a defensive fortress; think of the Castle of the Counts in Ghent. Over the centuries, the need for the wealthy to defend themselves disappeared and large mansions or pleasure courts were built in their place. These were often then given the name “castle” in the vernacular. Some of those very rich did not retreat outside the city but went to live in the city center. These luxurious residences resembled royal palaces on the interior level and were therefore named city palaces.
* Note that the existing buildings are not available for viewing and are often privately owned. Please respect the privacy of the owners and therefore do not enter the sites.
At some, the castle garden is accessible and even a picnic area and play area are provided.
Brothel towers and lowered Slate banks
The towers are built of limestone and sandstone. The southern “Speytorre” was built in 1385 to control traffic on the Lys. The tower was also part of the fortified enclosure of Kortrijk’s first burial castle. The northern “Inghelburghtorre” from 1415 served as an armory and was provided for the use of artillery. The Broel Bridge originally dates back to 1385. It was destroyed several times and rebuilt each time.
Starting in April 2018, you can enjoy a terrace on the lowered banks. This is the tourist hotspot of Kortrijk, in a beautiful setting surrounded by the best that Kortrijk has to offer.
